β¦ Synopsis
TMC-crown formazane was investigated as a selective spectrophotometric chelating agent for lithium. Measurement in the presence of 880-fold molar ratio of sodium was made. As little as 0.5 m&I lithium was readily measured. The effect of the sodium ion concentration on the background lithium signals was studied. Sodium causes depression of the lithium signal, and the relative effect diminishes as the total sodium concentration is increased. In a background solution containing 140 mM sodium, a 10 mM increment of sodium is equivalent to 0.007 m&f lithium. The effect of time on the signals was also studied. A 0.61% relative standard deviation was achieved for the measurement of 3 mM lithium in the presence of 50 mM sodium.
