✦ Synopsis

The safe operation of a batch polymerisation reactor assumes sufficient knowledge about all the possible reactions. An investigation has been made in order to predict, with the aid of a mathematical model based on a detailed reaction mechanism, the runaway ability of a styrene batch suspension polymerisation reactor. The results of the simulation were compared with the experimental data obtained from a bench-scale test cell.

The polymerisation and oxidation of styrene vapour have been studied, both in the absence and presence of the liquid monomer. When liquid styrene is absent, no appreciable polymerisation takes place in the gas phase below 500°C, at which temperature pyrolysis starts to occur; but styrene reacts with

## Abstract The mechanism of inhibition and retardation of the sensitised polymerisation of styrene has been investigated using the charge‐transfer complexes of N, N‐dimethylaniline (DMA) with chloranil. The results support the idea that the inhibition reactions involve electron‐transfer from the g
