✦ Synopsis
The reaction MgZ5(d, a)NaZ3 has been studied a t bombarding energies between 1.5 and 2.5 MeV. Excitation functions for the ground and the lowest six excited states were measured a t laboratory angles of 120°, 140" and 160". The energy resolution in the measurements was better than 10 keV. Fluctuations in these cross-sections were analysed on the basis of the ERICSON theory. The coherence width of the compound nucleus AlZ7 (with excitation energy 19 MeV) averaged over all transitions has been found t o be 29 keV.
From the analysis of the probability distributions of fluctuations. the number of independent magnetic substates was found to be less than that predicted by the theory. Numerous group-cross correlation functions for (d, p ) and (d, (x) reactions on MgZ5 were analysed.
