✦ Synopsis

The sorption and desorption of methylene chloride in and from a styrene copolymer is described for ultra thin films in the thickness range of 1.4/2 to 14.8/2. The sorption diffusion coefficient increases with decreasing film thicknesses less than about 3-4/2. This anomaly is explained in terms of a surface oxidized layer. Stress dependence and polymer relaxation effects are ruled out as explanations of this anomaly.
