โฆ Synopsis
It is shown that equations for the four functions, R s , R p , F s and F p for solid materials can be expressed as either quartics in e 4 (e 4 =e 1 รe 3 ) and e 2 or in polar co-ordinates; in each case, when e 2 is plotted against e 4 , heart-shaped ยฎgures are produced. Over the intermediate thickness range between the limit of validity of Abeleร s' equations and solids, the reยฏectances and phase changes show a series of maxima and minima due to interference between rays reยฏected from the top and bottom of the layer in agreement with the exact theory. The plots of these functions in the e 4 , e 2 plane change from circles (in the Abeleร s regime) to heart-shaped ยฎgures as the thickness increases.
