✦ Synopsis

The study of packet loss is of great importance to the design of fast packet switching systems. Fast packet switching is generally accepted as the best technique for designing high-speed computer networks. Due to the high throughput demands and the mixed traf®c environment, packet loss is unavoidable during overload situations when network buffers over¯ow. This paper presents an analysis of the temporal behaviour of packet loss in output buffered packet switches under bursty traf®c loading. Analytic models are developed for a packet switch where a number of bursty packet arrivals are multiplexed onto an output buffered switch. We present exact analytic expressions and techniques for computing various packet loss characteristics such as the time distribution of the system in the blocking periods, and duration of the non-blocking and blocking periods. We show through a number of numerical examples the effects of traf®c loading and correlation in the packet arrivals, as well as system parameters such as buffer size and speed-up factor of the switch fabric, on the packet loss process.

The main peculiarity of multimedia services is the presence of intermedia relationships, that is, time relationships between the various media making up the multimedia stream. These, in fact, affect the characteristics of the traffic offered to the network and therefore they have to be taken into ac
