β¦ Synopsis
An experimental study oJ low temperature flames of n-hexane has been conducted by means of a flow method using a Pyrex conical reactor over the temperature range of 250 Β° to 470Β°C. New information obtained is summarized as follows: (I) Under the proper conditions, the three flames, first-and second-stage cool ]lames and blue flame, remain stationary; (2) The apparent activation energies for the propagation o] these flames defined by Kaskan's equation are found to be ca. 6 hcal /rnole Jot the blue flame, and ca. 12 kcal/mote ]or the second-stage coot flame;
(3) The addition of ethylene to n-hexane-oxygen-nitrogen mixtures has little effect on the propagation velocities of these [lames. The above results lead to the supposition that the three flames correspond to the three bends on the ignition limit curves drawn on the pressure/ temperature diagram and that the negative temperature coefficient of the overall reaction rate may not be attributable to self-inhibition due to lower olefins such as ethylene as an intermediate product.

## Abstract Although a considerable amount of work has been done on the compressibility of __n__βhexane, it has been impossible until now to compare or evaluate the work of the various investigators. There has also been a serious lack of information in the region above the critical temperature. It
