✦ Synopsis
Combined
infrared and solid-state high-resolution 'H NMR investigattons at 270 MHz are used to study the H/D substitution for solid solutions of tris-sarcosine calcmm chloride (TSCC). Using crystals which were grown from aqueous solutions with different ratios of normal and heavy water, a thorough assignment of IR vibrational bands between t: 1100 and 500 cm-' was achieved providing an unambiguous analysis of H/D substitution. Quantitative data on deutermm concentrations in crystals from NMR measurements and the mass-density measured here were used to evaluate unit-cell volumes for the various deuterated crystals; they do not change with rising deuterium content.

The 'H-nmr studies were extensively carried out to elucidate preferred conformations of dipeptides CH,C\*O-X-NHCH,, with X = Abu, oval, and Val in various solvents. The vicinal 'H--'H coupling constants for the NH-CnH moiety and those around the C"-Cp bond in the articulated side chain provided the
