Untreated and ZnCI,-impregnated samples of Linby bituminous coal were pyrolysed at atmospheric pressure in a Gray-King retort and a quartz fluidized bed. It was confirmed in the Gray-King retort that in the absence of externally added hydrogen, and at slow heating rates (several degrees per minute),
