โฆ Synopsis
According to HMO calculations the cyclopentadienyl cation in the ground state should have an open molecular shell and triplet character. If the Jahn-Teller effect intervenes, the character of the open molecular shell is retained but the ground state should show singlet character. ESR studies of pentaphenylcyclopentadienyl hexachloroantimonate [I] indicate that the molecule has singlet character in the ground state. An open molecular shell is also obtained by HMO calculation for the indenyl and the fluorenyl cations [*I, whose thermodynamic stabilities are accordingly appreciably less than those of the isoelectronic diarylrnethyl and triarylmethyl
