magnified image In this study, a new synthetic route for the synthesis of 1‐hydroxy‐4‐oxo‐1,2,3,4‐tetrahydrocarbazole derivatives 12 and 13 from lactone 11 is described. Unfortunately, cyclization of compounds 12 and 13 to their respective azocino[4,3‐b]indole derivatives 14 and 15 was unsuccessful. J. Heterocyclic Chem., (2009).
