✦ Synopsis
A detailed analysis of the volatile hydrocarbons obtained from the reaction of benzene and AICI, was performed. Several experiments point to the intermediacy of phenylcyclohexane as a primary product. 13C-12C exchange was observed using a 1:l mixture of 13C6H6 and '*CsHs. Hydrogenation was predominant when polybenzenoids were reacted with AICI, in the presence of PtO,/H,. Cycloalkanes, however, undergo mainly ring contraction reactions.
