โฆ Synopsis
The oestrous cycle in the bitch is rather unusual in that the metoestrum is greatly prolonged, extending for a period equal to that of pregnancy (9 weeks). Of particular interest for the present problem is the marked development of the mammary glands, paralleling the proliferation of pregnancy, that occurs during this metoestrum, or pseudopregnancy. Studies on the oestrous cycle in the bitch include those of Retterer (1892), Bonnet (1897), Marshall and Jolly ( '06), Keller ( '09), and Marshall and Halnan ( '17). In addition to reviewing the literature on the subject, Evans and Cole ('31) have presented a very comprehensive study. They considered the cyclic changes in the ovary, uterus, and vagina, studying in all 146 animals. The mammary glands were not examined in their series, but the recent study by Turner and Comez
