β¦ Synopsis
The effect of various added non-electrolytes of progressively increasing molecular volume such as urea, glycine, glycerol, d-mannitol and sucrose on the viscosity behaviour of aqueous barium chloride solution has been investigated. The viscosity varies exponentially with the ionic strength of barium chloride in presence of these non-electrolytes.
For identical concentrations of different non-electrolytes, at a given temperature, the slopes of log (viscosity) as ionic strength plots are compared; the slopes are functions of the size of the non-electrolytes employed. Using the Andrade-Eyring equation, activation energies for viscous how are evaluated and their implications discussed.
