Abstract
Previous work on the effect of the locus rudimentary on wing morphogenesis showed that a disproportionate reduction in the number of cells in the posterior region of the wing accounted for the changes in wing shape. In the present study, I used both clonal analysis and direct histological observations to demonstrate that the deficiency in cell number in the adult wing resulted from cell death and that cell death can account for the changes in both the size and shape of r wings. Some discussion was devoted to the possible mechanisms by which an alteration in pyrimidine metabolism might lead to cell death.
