✦ Synopsis

There are highly sensitive chromogenic reactions of rare earth element ions such as Ce(IV), Eu(III), and Yb(III) with sym-tribromoarsenazo in the acidic medium and the absorption spectra of the formed complexes overlap seriously. The simultaneous computation-spectrophotometric determination of traces of the above-mentioned components was made using some chemometrics methods such as a partial least-squares method (PLS), a modified pure spectrum Kalman filtering method (KF-M), and a CPA-P matrix method (CPA-P). The optimum chromogenic condition and the optimum PLS computation condition, such as the additivity test, and the effect of variables, such as number, interval and position of wavelengths, number of calibration samples, and number of abstracted factors, on the analytical results, were studied in detail. Compared with KF-M and CPA-P methods, more satisfactory results were obtained for both simulation samples and simulated real samples using the PLS method.
