β¦ Synopsis
Two new series of poly(imide-ester)s and poly(imide-urethane)s have been synthesized from various N,N@-bis(u-hydroxyalkyl)pyromellitimides (HAPMIs). The poly(imide-ester)s were prepared from terephthalic acid with HAPMIs by melt polycondensation while poly(imide-urethane)s were obtained from HAPMIs with terephthaloyl diazide by solution polycondensation in DMSO using di-n-butyltin dilaurate at 75Β‘C. Synthesized polymers were characterized by elemental analysis, solubility, inherent viscosity, IR, 1H and 13C NMR and X-ray di β raction studies. Thermal stability and phase transition behaviour were evaluated by TGA, DSC and hot-stage optical polarized microscopy (HOPM). From X-ray di β raction studies d spacings were calculated for poly(imide-ester)s and d spacings showed an oddΓeven e β ect with varying number of methylene spacers. Similarly values obtained by DSC analysis, T m showed an oddΓeven e β ect. Thermal stability decreases as methylene chain length increases.

The synthesis and characterization of a series of poly(amic methyl ester)s from five aromatic dianhydrides and a diamine, 4,4-oxydianiline (ODA), are described. These poly(amic ester)s are obtained by the low-temperature polycondensation from dianhydrides derived diester-diacyl chlorides and ODA in
Two different series of poly(ester imide)s, which are distinguished from each other in the orientation of the ester linkages and show well-differentiated thermotropic behavior, are investigated by means of model calculations and dielectric relaxation spectroscopy. Model calculations show that the or
