Thermodynamic behaviour of copper in molten NaOH at 623K (35O"C) has been studied. The solubility product of cupric oxide, Ksp\_-2. was determined to he 2.5 x lo-" by chemical analysis. The standard potential of the Cu/Cu+ couple was found to be 1.97 V vs Na/Na+ and that of the Cu+/Cu\*+ couple was

โฆ Synopsis
Oxygen reduction in molten NaOH at 623 K has been studied by the use of an Ni rotating disk electrode and a porous 0, gas electrode. It was clarified that the diffusing species to the electrode surface is molecular oxygen itselC,and not an oxygencontaininganion, such as 0 : _, by limiting current measurements. Kinetic studies show that the following reaction mechanism is more probable: 0,+2r-40:-, O",-+ Hz0 --t 20H -+ 1/201, where the latter is rate determining. Since H,O transport to the electrode surface is rate determining, ~0'~ control is especially important, taking into account the following equilibrium;
