✦ Synopsis
A number of synthetic MnO, samples belonging to different crystalline modifications have been prepared and their physico-chemical properties such as chemical composition, microstructural features as revealed by X-ray dilkaction data, density, surface area and magnetic susceptibility at 27°C have been studied in order to characterise the samples for subsequent investigation on their electrochemical and catalytic activities. Almost all the samples have been found to be non-stoichiometric in nature and their composition and unit cell parameters in many cases deviate from the literature values. However, the experimental density values agree satisfactorily with those calculated on the basis ofeither anion vacancy or interstitial cation depending upon the nature of the samples. While no definite conclusion can IX drawn regarding characterisation of the sarnplcs from surface arcs measurement, magnetic susceptibility data not only help in characterking different groups of MnO,, but also are correlated with non-stoichiometry.
