✦ Synopsis

A suggestion that it might be possible to describe equilibria between ion exchangers and electrolyte solutions in analogy with membrane equilibria (Part II) has been followed up to determine the influence of some variables on the kinetics of ion exchange. It is proved that at low concentrations of the solution the mass transfer through a liquid film around the grain is ratedetermining for the process, whereas at high concentrations the rate-determining step is the diffusion within the grain (BOYD et al.). It is predicted that during a given process the relative influences of these two diffusion mechanisms need not always be constant.

Effects of magnetic exposure on an ion-exchange process are investigated, employing ion-exchange resins. The electrolyte solution, resin suspension, and water are mixed in a container, and the mass transfer coefficient is determined by measuring the change of the ionic concentration in the bulk. Two

## Abstract The kinetics for the exchange of Li^+^, K^+^, Rb^+^, and Cs^+^ for Na^+^ as the exchangeable cation on bentonite and montmorillonite K10 and KSF have been studied using conductimetric stoppedflow. Dilute aqueous suspensions of the clays, of particle sizes of a few micrometers, were used
