Abstract

Clutches containing up to five eggs were available from 16 birds over a period of three laying seasons. Variations in egg weight, shell thickness and membrane thickness were studied in relation to the position of the egg within the clutch. It was found that generally the results agreed with those of earlier workers, but the main argument used in the paper is that statistically significant differences are not necessarily a good basis on which to build biological hypotheses when individual clutches and individual birds show a large proportion of results which do not agree with the mean result.
