✦ Synopsis

The dynamic behavior of water in crosslinked chitosan (cr-CS) was studied at the molecular level by proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H-NMR) spectroscopy and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). Proton line width was used as a direct parameter of local mobility during swelling. The dynamic behavior of water in hydrogel can be described by the two following processes: physical movement along free volume cavities in network and binding with hydrophilic groups of hydrogel. The formation of bound water and the effect of water on polymer network were correlated with the relaxation of hydrogel network.

Water molecules absorbed into gelatin are found to be only partially crystallizable. The fraction of noncrystallizable water depends on whether the gelatin is native or crosslinked, and on the crosslinking conditions as well. This dependence is explained by the T g -regulation effect newly proposed

Water-soluble chitosan with a 50% deacetylation degree was prepared according to the literature. The mixtures of water-soluble chitosan and poly(acry1ic acid) (PAA) in water was studied by various experimental techniques, such as viscometry, potentiometry, and transmittance measurements. The results
