β¦ Synopsis
During the period May 1957 to May 1958, samples were taken from a pond near Anchorage, Alaska, for the purpose of learning something of the periodicity and species composition of the phytoplankton during a one-year cycle . Special emphasis was given the Chrysophyceae, as these represented the dominant group occurring under winter conditions . In an earlier work (ASMUND & HILLIARD, 1961), a systematic account was given of Mallomonas species present in both the spring and fall maxima . The present paper discusses taxa not previously considered .
Initially three unnamed ponds, provisionally designated as Ponds I, II, and IV, were investigated . The descriptions of these ponds with notes on vegetation, geology, and chemistry have appeared elsewhere (ASMUND & HILLIARD, op. cit .) . For the purpose of this report, however, only Pond II will be considered .
Methods
One-liter samples were collected from the surface water about one meter off shore. Sampling was done on a weekly basis from May through December 30, 1957, and at two or four week intervals during the remaining period . Samples were treated with 5% formalin and concentrated by centrifugation to 10 ml and stored for future consideration (enumeration) . Companion samples were similarly collected
