✦ Synopsis

At temperatures above about 1100 ~ C degassed molten kimberlites were found to attack diamond, producing both graphite and metallic iron on the diamond surface. Using ordinary kimberlites in experiments performed at 1 Kb in a closed system, diamonds developed etch features (at temperatures above about i000 ~ C), consistent with attack by wet C02, but no graphite or iron was formed on the surfaces of the diamonds.
