โœฆ Synopsis

The material eYaminod consisted of adult specimens (male and female) of the shrimp Crangon cranr (L.) collected during the snmmer of i967 from the Gdafisk Bay of the Baltic Sea. Colnmn and f, hin-layer chromatography was used for the separation of the oarotenoids. The ester compounds and ~r~tein complexes of earotenoids were hydrolized with t5~ H in mef.h~nol at room temperature in a nit~-ogen atmosphere for 48 h. The absorption m~ma of the various fractions and spots were determined on the spectrophotometer "Speool" after elua~ion. The identification of the eamtenoids was based mainly on the abserp~ion maxima in appropriate organic selvents and on the 1~ values. The acetone extract from the Crangon crangou specimens gave a light blue fluorescence and absorption maxima at wavelengths of 447, 463, 595 to 596 and 667 m[z. The following camtenoids were found to be present in the adult specimens of Crangon crangon: fl-carotene, cantaxanthin~ astaxanthin, free and ester~ed lutein, zeaxanthin, and a form of xanthophyll which was not precisely identified. In addition to the above, bi]iary dyes were also found, probably of the mesobilivioliu and mesobilirhodin type.
