โœฆ Synopsis

Abstract

Spores of Rhizopus stolonifer Lind. were unable to invade plugs of carrot root tissue on their own, but could do so when suspended in either a solution of pectinase or in washings from their own culture. Young mycelial inocula readily attacked the tissue. It is suggested that breakdown of the middle lamella of the carrot tissue by pectinase was necessary before R. stolonifer could invade the tissue. When invasion of carrot tissue had occurred, a maximum rate of respiration was observed just before sporangia were formed.
