Crystallization of a liquid similar to that present in Portland cement at clinkering temperatures has been studied. Its composition (in wt %) is CaO = 54.8, A~203 = 22.7, Fez03 = 16.5, Si02 = 6.0. Prolonged crystallization or slow cooling yields the equilibrium phases: C3A, ferrite close to C,AF, an

โฆ Synopsis
Devitrification of a glass containing CaO = 48.9, A~203 = 23.2, Fe203 = 14.2, Si02 = 5.71, MgO = 5.0, Na~O = 3.0 (wt %) at 650 o-700ยฐC yields large amounts of a crystalli~e phase which is rhombohedral, aH = 10.61, e H = 26.18 A.
Partially-indexed powder x-ray data are given.
The phase has the approximate composition, relative to 144 oxygens: Ca59.TNa3.sMg6.oA~29.TFe1~,~Sis.90~.
Its crystallization partially suppresses formation of CaA during devitrification. Compositional data are also given for proto-C~A formed from this glass.
The solubilities of Fe andSi in this unstable variety of CaA considerably exceed the equilibrium values.

Both the chemical and phase compositions of the crystalline interstitial phases in clinker vary significantly depending on the cooling rate and NaaO content of clinker. The phase constitution of alite in portland cement clinker highly depends not only on the chemical composition of a raw mix but also on the kinetics of crystallization from the interstitial melt. From the melt of high supersaturation alite can be crystallized so quickly as to take up foreign ions i
