✦ Synopsis

Even though being the subject of intense scrutiny during the last decade halo nuclei still offer unanswered questions.

One way of adding confidence to the conclusions obtained in the often difficult experiments is to probe the same physical observable in various ways. The prominent example in this contribution will be the orbital structure of the two halo neutrons in 'lLi probed both via beta decay and high-energy reaction experiments, but other aspects of these two experiments will also be mentioned.

Beta-decay investigations of light nuclei close to the drip lines have revealed new and intriguing features of nuclear structure. The first information on the level structure of the N = 21 nuclei, 35 Si and 33 Mg, has been obtained by the beta decay study of 35 Al and 33 Na, produced by fragmentation of an UC target with 1.4 GeV protons at CERN/ISOLDE. With the inverse kinematics method, the reaction mechanism which leads to the formation of light nuclides was investigated with a 1 A GeV 238 U beam impinging on a liquid H 2 target. Experimental data on ground-and excited-state properties for all nuclei with mass number A=144 have been compiled and evaluated. States populated in radioactive decay as well as in nuclear reactions have been considered. For these nuclei, level and decay schemes have been built, as well as tables of
