β¦ Synopsis
One of the central problems in non-aqueous electrolytes is the characterization of the interactions that exist among the constituent ions and among the ions and the solvent. This is an important problem because the structural, thermodynamic, and transport properties of aqueous and non-aqueous electrolytes and molten salts depend on the nature and the range of such interactions. These vary widely from the idealized extreme of point-centered coulomb forces between positive and negative charges at high dilutions on one hand, to those of the directed electronic charge distributions of the covalent bonds of the solvent species at higher concentrations, on the other hand, and in the upper limit of concentration in the molten state of ionic compounds, i.e. truly ionic liquids.
