The origin of the photoferroelectric effect in liquid crystals, where the spontaneous polarization of a chiral ferroelectric smectic-C\* (SmC\*) host phase is changed by the E,Z-photoisomerization of azobenzene dopant molecules, was investigated by kinetic studies on the molecular isomerization and
