Methyl xaathophaulc acid (yellow) and &ethyl glaucophaaic acid (black) form when ethyl ethoxymethyleneacetoacetate aud ethyl sodioacetoacetate are heated together.(') Diethyl xauthopmc acid ha6 received implausible quiaouoid fomulatious,(2*3) but Fiestc4) ha6 euggested a more acceptable structure (I). Structure (II> is now proposed with (III) for the hitherto uuformulated diethyl glaucophaaic acid. Other esters say be prepared aualogou6ly; they are novel pyrone-oxouola.
