โฆ Synopsis
The structural consequences of quenching a component of a square-well fluid into a disordered matrix are evaluated using the hypernetted-chain closure in Ornstein-Zernike relations for distribution functions in random systems. Three models are examined for the interaction potentials, which add to hard-core repulsions (1) square-well attractions between all particles, (2) square-well attractions favouring adsorption of annealed particles by the quenched component, or (3) square-well attractions favouring demixing. In the two former cases the gross effect of partial quenching is the decreased localization of the annealed component in the attractive wells of the quenched component, while in the third case demixing is replaced by a tendency to clustering of annealed particles within the quenched matrix. Very minor quantitative differences are found in the structural functions when the replica Ornstein-Zernike relations derived by Given and Stell for a partly quenched system are simplified to those given earlier by Madden and Glandt.
