✦ Synopsis

Pr,Ba,Cu,Ti,O, ], a possible new superconducting parent phase, was prepared by a standard ceramic method, Intermediate products were identified by X-ray powder diffraction. Rietveld analysis revealed the layered perovskite crystal structure of Pr,Ba,Cu,Ti,O, , and the relationship to known superconductors. The physical properties were investigated by impedance spectroscopy and magnetic measurements.

The redox chemistry of Pr,Ba,Cu,Ti,O, , was examined using thermogravimetry. The reduction of CL? via Cu' to Cu' was observed and a reversible re-oxidation of Cu' to Cu" was found.

The synthesis of several substituted and unsubstituted derivatives of the series of layered perovskites Ln2Ba2Cu2Ti2O11 by a sol-gel method is reported. Reduced synthesis temperatures were attained for La, Nd (750Β°C), and Eu (900Β°C) derivatives, whereas Tb derivatives could not be obtained by this m
