Abstract

A novel intermetallic compound, TbCo~7–x~M~x~ (M = 3d transition metal or normal metal), has been successfully synthesized. TbCo~7–x~M~x~ crystallizes in a hexagonal TbCu~7~ structure with space group of P6/mmm. According to the structural refinement, the M dopants occupy the 2e and 3g crystal positions based on their electronegativities. TbCo~7–x~M~x~ exhibits ferromagnetic order. The saturation moment has been calculated with a corrected magnetic valence model; the calculated results agree well with experiment. The correction to the structural stability model of TbCo~7–x~M~x~ has been discussed in terms of the effective atomic radius ratio and the difference of electronegativity between Tb and (Co, M).
