โœฆ Synopsis

The structure of a novel expolysaccharide obtained from a mutant of Rhizobium meliloti strain Rm1021 was elucidated by a combination of enzymic, chemical, and spectroscopic methods. The polysaccharide is composed of a disaccharide repeating-unit, p-D-Glcp-( 133)-~-D-Galp-( l~3), having a 6-0-acetyl group attached to most D-glucose residues and a 4,6-~-(l-carboxyethylidene) group attached to every D-galactose residue.

Acetan is a bacterial polysaccharide produced by Acetobacter xylinum NRRL B42. Chemical mutagenesis of A.xylinum allowed selection of a mutant strain which produced a new polysaccharide, CR1/4. 2D NMR methods have been used to assign the 1H and 13C spectra of the two polysaccharides and to determine

The exopolysaccharide produced by the bacterium Alteromonas sp. strain 1644 originating from deep sea hydrothermal vents was shown to contain a novel glucuronic acid derivatives: 3-O-[(R)-1-carboxyethyl]-D-glucuronic acid. The structure of this compound was established on the basis of mass spectrome
