✦ Synopsis
The structure of aspirochlorine has been revised to the novel epidithiopiperazine-2,5-dione 1 on the basis of chemical, spectroscopic, and x-ray crystallographic experiments.
Aspirochlorine (=antibiotic A30641) was isolated' over a decade ago from the fungus Aspergihs flaws.
Among its more interesting biological properties was the induction of spherical hyphal swellings in the phytopathogenic fungal genus Phytophthora. 2 Aspirochlorine was also the true antimicrobial constituent of the antibiotic oryzachlorin produced by A. oryzae. 3 Earlier chemical and spectral studies had suggested formulation 2 for aspirochlorine, but in this paper we wish to report revised structure 1 for aspirochlorine and assign its absolute stereochemistry.
