✦ Synopsis
An X-ray crystal structure of I-(pN,N-diethylanilino)naphthalene, I, shows twisting between the two aromatic moieties (/3= 58.7" ), Excitation of I in solution with near ultraviolet radiation leads to a highly solvatochromic fluorescence. The emitting state is estimated to have a dipole moment of 1 O-14 D which is consistent with a radical cation (aniline as the donor)/radical anion (naphthalene as the acceptor) description. Excellent agreement is observed between the energy of the fluorescence in acetonitrile (2.7 1 eV) and the calculated energy of the radical cation/radical anion state (2.78 eV) in polar media.
