✦ Synopsis
The solid solution (\mathrm{Sr}{3 x} \mathrm{La}{2-3 x} \mathrm{Zn}{1-x} \mathrm{Ru}{x} \mathrm{O}{4}\left(\frac{1}{3} \leq x \leq \frac{2}{5}\right)) has the tetragonal (\mathrm{K}{2} \mathrm{NiF}_{4}) structure with a disordered arrangement of (\mathrm{Zn}^{2+}) and (\mathrm{Ru}^{5+}) over the octahedral sites. The sample with (x=\frac{1}{3}) is found to be paramagnetic over the temperature range (6<T<296 \mathrm{~K}). As the ruthenium concentration increases, short-range antiferromagnetic interactions between (\mathrm{Ru}^{\mathrm{s+}}) ions become more important; the magnetic susceptibility shows a maximum at low temperatures when (x) is larger than the pereolation threshold for a nearestneighbor square lattice (0.59). However, the magnetic irreversibility observed for the samples with (x=\frac{1}{2}) and (\frac{3}{3}) indicates that next-nearest-neighbor interactions also play an important role in determining the magnetic properties of these compounds.
