✦ Synopsis

Abstract

The effect of stretch gloves in treatment of arthritis affecting the hands was evaluated in 9 hospitalized and 14 ambulatory patients. Eighteen patients had rheumatoid arthritis, 2 had other forms of connective tissue disease, and 3 had degenerative joint disease. No statistically significant improvement in ring size, range of motion or grip strength was noted. Moderate or marked subjective improvement in morning stiffness and/or night pain was observed in 5 of 9 hospitalized patients, and in 7 of 14 ambulatory patients. It is suggested that stretch gloves provide a safe addition to the management of arthritis of the hands which will be effective to some degree in a majority of patients.
