โœฆ Synopsis

A sensitive stressometer has been used to measure the stresses produced in carbon-steels and nickel during cathodic hydrogen charging and during the decay of stress on termination of charging. A theoretical model describing the stress kinetics has been derived and used to evaluate diffusion coefBcients from the experimental data. The effect of cd on the relative amounts of plastic and elastic strain occurring during charging of annealed mild steel is reported.

A sensitive stressometer, incorporating the principles of the Brenner-Senderoff Spiral Contractometer and the Hoar-Arrowsmith null-point method, has been designed which is capable of monitoring the entry of cathodic hydrogen into steel. Some preliminary results have been given to illustrate the sens
