✦ Synopsis

With recent developments in the process of forging and die designing for closed-die hot forging, the latter is establishing itself as a precision manufacturing method for producing forged parts with small mashing allowances and close tolerances. This makes the application of hot forging possible even when bevel and cylindrical spur gears are involved.

The design of dies and components in precision closed-die forging requires knowledge of methods for component design. The present study considers two methods for calculating the stresses and strains in a die insert for the closed-die forging of cylindrical spur gears: the first is based on the well-known method of Lamd, and the second on the application of the finite-element method (FEM). The latter allows a more precise solution, which takes into account both the effect of the development of the tooth within the die insert and the compressive pressure of the housing holding the insert.
