✦ Synopsis

A variational theorem, the principle of minimum potential energy (PMPE), in multilayer unidirectional composites is presented. It is demonstrated that this theorem is equal to the corresponding shear-lag equations. By this theorem the distributions of stress and displacement, and stress concentration factors for multilayer unidirectional composites with a surface notch, are approximately computed. The initiations of delamination and debonding are analysed.
