I n three sediment cores from the Central Baltic Sea (Bornholm Basin, Gdansk Bay) correspondyng horizons with maximum abundance of remains of a limnetic fauna (Cladocera, Chironomidae) were found. These associations indicate the existence of an oligotrophic frcshwater hke. Ho\tever.. this horizon does not coincide with the Ancylus stage but is located in sediment layers from the rcry end of that period, or from the Mnstogloia stage, which was a transitional brackish water phase.
