<p>本书是一本研究清朝末年中国向近代转型的学术著作。清代中国的主要“大门”是广州,“陌生人”即外国人。顾名思义,《大门口的陌生人》是与外国人闯入广州(中国大门)的历史有关,是关于鸦片战争外国入侵中国的。但这本书主要不以此研究为主,而是以英国侵略中国的两次鸦片战争为线索,研究这一历史时期广州和广东省的社会动态,如官府、绅士、团练、农民等对外国的态度;各自的活动、相互间的关系以及变化,从而揭示中国近代史的开始阶段的某些动向。</p>
