✦ Synopsis

It is shown that nonlinear longitudinal strain kinks may propagate in an elastic rod due to its interaction with a viscoelastic external medium or cubic nonlinearity of the elastic material. We establish the governing nonlinear dispersive-dissipative equation of the problem and provide the corresponding exact traveling wave solutions. The role played by dissipation and dispersion on the propagation of the kink is also considered in both the weakly dispersive and the weakly dissipative (active) cases.
