## Abstract Further insight into the functional consistent displacement correlation method to calculate the stress‐intensity factor for elliptical cracks will be presented. The method will be modified to account for the actual crack face shape in pure opening mode.

✦ Synopsis
Almraet--ln tl'is study, the determination of the opening mode stress intensity factor by using strain gage methods is inv,.-stigated both experimentally and analytically. The results are compared with the finite element solution. In the experimental program, cracks are opened at the tip of crack starter slot on the standard compact tension test specimens by using Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) and Wiring Discharge Machining (WDM). Strain gage data from the crack tip region are used to calculate stress intensity factors with some limitations.

A new simple method for the photoelastic determination of Mode I stress intensity factors from isochromatics is proposed. This method takes into account the fact that a considerable part of the error committed in the photoelastic determination of Mode i stress intensity factors Kt at crack tips, bas
