โฆ Synopsis
In the archives of imaginative fiction Joseph Payne Brennan made a permanent niche for himself with his first book, Nine Horrors. Never a prolific author, he wrought his tales with careful craftsmanship and economy of prose style.
Stories of Darkness and Dread presents a fine selection of 18 titles written since his previous volume. Some are only a few pages in length, all that is needed for the chilling shock of Delivery on Erdmore Street, and Apprehension, and Black Thing at Midnight. Others develop a sustained power for the supernatural force of City of the Seven Winds and The Keeper of the Dust. And while most of his work involves unearthly encounters, The Dump offers a nightmarish science-fiction view of the future calculated to make all readers content to be living today.
His method is civilized, his treatment literate. He often uses the milieu of his native Connecticut, the cities, the countryside, the seacoast as settings for the macabre or the terrifying, with sympathy and insight into the humblest of his characters who become caught in demonic stresses.
