The p r o b a b i l i t y d i s t r i b u t i o n of t h e process level is derived for a general class of irreversible reaction systems. A m e t h o d of a p p r o x i m a t i n g t h e m e a n a n d v a r i a n c e of t h e process level is developed a n d s h o w n to be more accurate for small irreversible systems t h a n o t h e r a p p r o x i m a t i o n s used in t h e stochastic a p p r o a c h to kinetics.
