โœฆ Synopsis

Responses of single labellar sugar receptors to glucose and its derivatives related to C 1 were studied in the fleshfly, Boettcherisca peregrina.

Analyzing concentration-response curve with each stimulant, we estimated its affinity for the sugar receptor site, the maximum response it evoked, and the Hill coefficient (Table 1). The results showed: (1) a polar group such as --OH both in and fl position was not necessary for stimulation;

(2) a-glucose had the same affinity, but larger maximum response and smaller Hill coefficient in comparison with fl-glueose; (3) a polar group such as ethylene glycol residue in ~ position was favorable for both affinity and the maximum response; (4) non-polar groups such as methyl, ethyl and p-ni%rophenyl groups in ~ position were favorable for the affinity but not for the maximum response, whereas the same in fl position were unfavorable both for the affinity and for the maximum response; (5) derivatives with fl-configuration showed a tendency to give the concentration-response curve of higher Hill coefficients than those with ~-configuration.
