โฆ Synopsis
Steel compression flanges for bridge girders receive discrete lateral restraint from diaphragms and transverse frames. Relationships between the compressive force at first yield in a flange, treated as an imperfect strut, and the spacing, strength, and stiffness of up to two elastic lateral restraints have been found by finite element parametric studies. Analyses for various shapes of initial imperfection, distributions of axial force along the member, and end conditions have led to improved design rules for lateral restraints. Other analyses have led to conditions for the safe use of the beam-on-elastic foundation analogy for finding elastic critical buckling forces. Comments are given on relevant provisions in the draft Eurocode for steel bridges.
